PRESS RELEASE
SMALL WELSH SCHOOLS FUND EXPANDED
A major fundraising effort is under way to support research into the impact of
small schools in Wales.
The Small Welsh Schools Fund (SWSF) was originally established in January 2005 by
the Association of Communities in Wales with Small Schools (ACWSS). The Fund has
already paid out considerable prize money since its inception. ACWSS has now joined
forces with recently established Hyb (Hyrwyddo Ysgolion Bach:Promoting Small
Schools). The SWSF is being extended so that it can support the initiatives of Hyb
who are carrying out essential research in to the benefits of small schools. The
money gathered from SWSF activity will be used by Hyb to continue to conduct indepth
research. Such evidence is vital when challenging the closure of small
schools.
How does the SWSF (Hyb) Fund work?
The Fund is hoping to increase its membership to 1000. Each member of the Fund
pays £1 a week through a standing order. 35% of the Fund will be paid out in prizes
every quarter. 10% will go towards the administration of the Fund, and the
remaining 55% will support the activities of Hyb.
To aid this expansion, the Fund is looking for 50 promoters across Wales. Each
promoter will receive £5 for every completed mandate returned. In this way,
individuals or community groups will earn £100 for every 20 people recruited.
For further information about the Fund, contact Cris Tomos – SWSF Coordinator
on 07974 099738. An outline of the Fund and mandate can be
downloaded from www.acwss.org.uk.
Hyb
Hyb has already produced one research report ‘The Cost of small primary schools
in Wales: Review of evidence’, which suggests that the savings from small school
closures may be very much less than that claimed by education authorities. Copies
of the report may be downloaded from the Hyb website

DATGANIAD I’R WASG – 5ed Tachwedd 2010
EHANGU CRONFA YSGOLION BACH CYMRU
Mae ymdrech fawr ar fynd i gasglu arian er mwyn gwneud rhagor o ymwchwil i
fuddiannau ysgolion bach Cymru.
Sefydlwyd Cronfa Ysgolion Bach Cymru yn wreiddiol ym mis Ionawr 2005 gan
Gymdeithas Cymunedau Cymru gydag Ysgolion Bach (CCCYB). Ers hynny fe
dalwyd swm sylweddol o wobrau ariannol o’r gronfa. Mae’r Gymdeithas
bellach yn cydweithio gyda Hyb (Hyrwyddo Ysgolion Bach) i droi’r Gronfa Ysgolion
Bach yn gronfa i gefnogi ymchwil Hyb i fuddiannau ysgolion bychain
(www.hyb.org.uk). Mae ymchwil o’r fath yn hanfodol bwysig wrth ddadlau yn erbyn
cau ysgolion bach.
Sut mae’r Gronfa Ysgolion Bach (Hyb) yn gweithio?
Gobaith y rheini sy’n gyfrifol am y Gronfa Ysgolion Bach yw cynyddu nifer yr
aelodau i 1000 gyda phob aelod yn talu £1 yr wythnos trwy archeb sefydlog. Mae
35% o arian y Gronfa yn mynd tuag at y gwobrau ariannol chwarterol, 10% at gostau
gweinyddu a 55% i gefnogi gwaith Hyb.
Er mwyn chwyddo’r Gronfa mae CYBC yn edrych am 50 o hyrwyddwyr o bob cwr o
Gymru. Bydd yr hyrwyddwyr yn derbyn £5 am bob ffurflen a gaiff ei dychwelyd a
bydd modd iddynt ennill £100 am bob 20 aelod newydd.
Am fwy o wybodaeth cysylltwch â Cris Tomos – Cydlynydd Cronfa Ysgolion Bach
Cymru ar 07974 099738. Mae modd lawrlwytho mandad ac amlinelliad o’r hyn
yw’r Gronfa o: www.acwss.org.uk.
Hyb
Mae Hyb eisoes wedi llunio un adroddiad ymchwil sef ‘Cost Ysgolion Cynradd
Bychain Cymru: Adolygu’r Dystiolaeth’. Mae’r adroddiad yma’n awgrymu y gallai’r
arbedion a ddaw yn sgil cau ysgolion fod yn llawer llai na’r arbedion y mae’r
awdurdodau addysg yn eu datgan. Lawrlwythwch yr adroddiad o wefan Hyb:

Small Welsh Schools Fund (SWSF) - Fundraising Arm of the Association of Communities in Wales with Small Schools (ACWSS)

Thank you for considering joining SWSF. It is hoped that we will attract members from all over the country and that the £1 a week donated (i.e. 14p per day) will ensure that the Fund can employ an individual to take up the challenge of assisting Communities in Wales with small School to Survive.

The fund will also be providing incentives for people to continue with their contribution by holding a monthly draw.

As you see from the Standing Order Mandate we will be collecting the weekly £1 every 3 months, that is every 13 weeks. But to start the contributions flowing into the fund an initial £6 will be collected to assist with the setting up of the fund and resources. Also we will be ensuring all professional systems are put in place to provide all members with confirmation of their Draw Number and ensuring that regular newsletters are sent to inform everyone of the monthly winners and the good working being achieved with the assistance of their £1 a week donation.

The voluntary organising committee of the Fund also wishes to attract promoters from across the country who can possibly talk to other friends, family or local groups who could join the fund. We would ensure that promoters receive a contribution for out of pocket costs : telephone, fuel and time spent meeting prospective new members. The collector’s contribution will be based on the number of new members gained. If you know of anyone who might be interested please pass on their details or ask them to contact me on 01239 831962

Once again many thank for your support. By working together we can achieve great results and assist in saving small Welsh Schools who wish to remain open and thus assist communities across the country.

  • The objectives of Association of Communities in Wales with Small Schools (ACWSS) are to provide support and information to communities in Wales with small schools in order to develop and expand their sustainable community opportunities.
  • To highlight sustainable community development opportunities that will focus on utilising the community school building and facilities during non-statutory education periods.
  • To also offer expansion opportunities for community services based on social enterprise and cooperative company models.
